You deserve to give yourself the same love that you give to everyone else.

Not everything I write will be a masterpiece; I know that. It is a process selecting words to convey feelings never meant to be spoken. So maybe I’ve been searching for what’s already been said and this is the finest way I can say it. I love you, in everything I am, I love you.

To me, you’ll always be the rising suns, the sinking moons, and all the stars that come between the sound of rain and river stones, the warmth of my sheets, the ache in my bones.

You are the fever that never broke, the name stuck in my throat. You are every letter of every word in every poem I ever wrote.

I know that god is real. I have seen him smile through the sunlight as it dances across your skin and lays gently at your feet.

A writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.

I don’t read history. That’s in the past. I’m thinking of the future.

If you are not criticized, you may not be doing much.

A person that started in to carry a cat home by the tail was getting knowledge that was always going to be useful to him, and warn’t ever going to grow dim or doubtful.

Treat everyone as if they were a guest in your own house, because in reality, they are a guest in your own world.

I can’t understand why a person will take a year to write a novel when he can easily buy one for a few dollars.

Some people prefer the passenger role, because it imposes no real pressure to decide or stand accountable for their life results.

[To Robertson] I think you should move to California. Malibu is paradise. You can always change your mind. Why don’t you just let me put this together? I’ll get you a house in the Malibu Colony.

I grew up in athletics, where people keep score.

There are people who strictly deprive themselves of each and every eatable, drinkable, and smokable which has in any way acquired a shady reputation. They pay this price for health. And health is all they get for it. How strange it is. It is like paying out your whole fortune for a cow that has gone dry.

History doesn’t mean dates and wars and textbooks to me; it means the unconquerable pioneer spirit of man.

A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.

Seeing things that are bothering you written down takes away their power. It gives you a perspective. Helps you contain them.
